US welcomes Syrian-Saudi summit

 

 
US Assistant SecretaryState for Middle East Affairs Jeffrey Feltman has welcomed the Syrian-Saudi summit's interest in the new Lebanese government line up, describing his talks held ten days ago with the Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Meqdad as positive and constructive.
The remarks were made in an interview with alhurra Arabc Language T.V. channel which affiliates to the US State Department.
Feltman said : "If the Syrian-Saudi summit's interest in Lebanese is for forming their government, Washington welcomes this".
He added his country hopes that Lebanese leaders would form the government as soon as possible under Lebanon's constitute and democratic elections, stressing Washington's commitment to fully back Lebanon's sovereignty and independence.
"Lebanon's cause was raised during talks with the Syrian side in Washington", Feltman said, adding that al-Meqdad told him that responsibility of forming the Lebanese government is up to Lebanese themselves.
Feltman asserted that talks between the Syrian and US sides in Washington contributed to achieve progress in bilateral ties.
Al-Meqdad visited Washington in September 29 and held talks with senior US officials including Feltman, and US Deputy Secretary of State as well as Middle East Director at National Security Council.
In this context, Feltman cited that it was the first time since 2003 to invite a Syrian Official delegation to Washington.
"This reflects our determination to use diplomacy with Syrians according to President Barak Obama's policy", the US official said.
He noted that disputes between the two states should not be treated right away, adding :"we can constructively start to treat some questions".
Last June, Feltman visited Syria as a member of delegation headed by Obama's Envoy to Middle East.
